[resolved] Setting up a new blog with existing blog running (4 posts)

    Background:
    - WordPress v1.5.2.
    - Existing blog running with the default setting $table_prefix = 'wp_' set in the wp-config.php file.
    - Single MySQL database available (can not increase this due to the hosting plan used).
    - Existing blog installed under ~/www/blog.

    Want:
    - Add a second or a third WP blog off the same domain/host.
    - Ability for each blog to behave independently.

    Q:
    - How do I add this second blog given my situation? Is it correct to assume that I should do the following?
    1) Create a new directory ~/www/blog2
    2) Install a second copy of WP into the new blog2 directory.
    3) Edit wp-config.php file and change to $table_prefix = 'wp2_', while keeping the same MySQL database information settings as for the existing blog.
    4) Login to blog2 and startup per routine.

    - If the above sequence is correct, then is it also correct to assume that adding this second blog won't affect the running of the first blog?

    - Once a blog is running eg. My existing blog, can I still change the $table_prefix setting? Under the above scenario, can I change the first blog to something like $table_prefix = 'myoriginalblog_' without starting all over again? Or is it a case once a blog has been started, all the settings are fixed and can no longer be changed without major hassels?

I am a true novice who can't code and really need some guiding hands. Thanks.

    1-4 is perfect.
The second will not interfere with the first.

You can change the table prefix. You need to use phpmyadmin to alter the existing ones and also the wp-config setting. Before you do this though, do backup. There is no UNDO feature in phpmyadmin and better safe than sorry.

ok I have a similar situation, but slighty different:

    Background:
    - WordPress v1.5.2.
    - Existing blog running with the default setting $table_prefix = 'wp_' set in the wp-config.php file.
    - Existing blog set up and running with MySQL database.
    - Existing blog installed under ~/www/
    - New blog to have it own MySQL database.
    - New blog installed under ~/www/blog2
    - Second copy of WP already installed a second copy of WP into the new blog2 directory
    - Editted wp-config.php file with new MySQL database information settings.

    Want:
    - Add a second or a third WP blog off the same domain/host.
    - Ability for each blog to behave independently.

    Issue:
    - When I try to set up the new blog I get the following error mgs:
    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

    * Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    * Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    * Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

I am positive that the wp-config file is correct and the host server is running.

    what am I doing incorrectly?

I am clay in your hands, mold me :)
