Setting the permissions for Next-Gen gallery?

I recently switched servers, and when I did so, Next gen gallery is no longer letting me use the zip uploader to post a gallery. I was able to work around it by loading the folder into the gallery folder on ftp, and then manually resetting the permissions to make it write-able. I assume the fact that it was not automatically writeable when i uploaded it is why this is not working, so my question is: is there a way to set this in WordPress, or is it on my server. If it is the latter, does anyone have any idea what i need to change there? thank you in advance
