Support » Fixing WordPress » Set text width for page

  • Hi. I’ve saw a few similar posts on this but none that have solved my problem completely.

    I want to adjust the default text width for my pages. Right now the text stretches across the whole page whereas I want only a few inches. The images size and all the other features I am happy with – its only the text width which needs altering.

    I am relatively new to WordPress and CSS, and CSS I have inputted previously did not work. I have Custom CSS manager already installed.

    Any help?

  • Hi, could you please provide a link to your site?

    You could try adding this bit of code to your Custom CSS:

    .page-template-template-full-custom-php .section-boxed {
    max-width: 900px;
    }

    You might want to play around a bit with the 900px setting to get the exact width you want.

    Let me know if that helps.

    Thanks – that definitely worked. Although the width of the menu text and logo at the top has also reduced in size. Is there a way to isolate this from the changes in the body text width?

    OK, a better way would be to define your own class which won’t interfere with other elements, and use this class where you want a narrow column of text within a full width area.

    As you’re using a premium theme which we don’t have access to here on the forums, I can’t test how changes will appear but something like this should work.

    In your Custom CSS, replace the code snippet quoted above with this:

    .narrowcolumn {
    max-width: 700px;
    }

    Next, using ‘Text’ mode in your page editor, wrap your text in a div like this –

    <div class="narrowcolumn">At the edge of the mountain, we watched the dark cloud submerge the radio mast that we had been aiming for all afternoon. The storm swallowed the mountain tip ......</div>

    Thanks. That worked, although the parallax image at bottom has been clipped at the edges now. I’m struggling to define the width of the text only and not have it affect the other features of the page.

    Hi all,

    I’ve tried the above CSS code, but it is still affecting aspects of the page- including a parallax image. I’m just trying to set the width and alignment of the text on this specific page – nothing else.

    Does anyone have any suggestions how to do this? As I mentioned before I’m relatively new to WordPress.
