I think WordPress should bring the feature of setting Featured Image via URL back because alot of hosting site only allow a limit number of file upload to their host, so now in WordPress 3.5.1, we can only set featured image by uploading it to the host and use it. It will not be a problem with a site have few post but with the site have alot of posts like magazine,...One day, the uploaded files will reach the limit. So I think it will be better if we can set the image via URL because we can use another host like flickr, photobucket to save it.
Sorry for my English Gramma :) I hope you can understand it

There's one big problem, and one smaller issue that I can see straight away.

The big problem is, what happens when the remote image isn't available, or is deleted? If you're managing the images there's less chance that you'll delete it, but if soemone else is administering it, you never know what they are going to do.

The smaller issue is with the hosting. Although some hosts do enforce limits on the amount of file,s it's more common to limit the storage space. Either way, if you reach the limit it's normally a very eays thing to upgrade to a new hosting package that allows greater resources. If your site is that good that it's hitting that sort of resource limit it's definately worth a few extra $ each month for a better hosting package.

"what happens when the remote image isn't available, or is deleted?"

You change it to another URL or image... at the end of the day if that's what the admin is happy to risk then let them. I can't see this as a reason not to include this feature if the responsibility falls upon the admin.

The 'problems' you talk about are the admin's responsibility and no one else's, so if they are happy to deal with these 'potential' problems, I can see no reason not to have this feature.

  4. Pete, the only reason I disagee that it's 'no one else's' problem is the volume of people who come here yelling at us when they do silly things :)

It should be no one's responsibility but their own, however the easier it is that you make something dangerous to do, the more often someone will cut off their nose.

See: Changing home/site URLs, changing image locations, etc etc :/

tl;dr: The majority of WP users aren't educated enough to know why it's a bad/dangerous idea, let's not set them up for failure.

But it's allowed as a normal image insertion into a post anyway, so if they can handle that then surely they can handle the same thing as a featured image?

yes. As Pete sad, it allowed to insert image to the post via URL so why not for featured image? I understand the risk but if the admin has the premium account of another image website like flickr or photobucket. I think the featured image URL will be secured.

Would be nice for a WP core dude to chime in with justifying one but not the other

I hope this functionality can be brought back, for things like flickr collections
