# Server load problems with “rewriteengine” code – help?

 * I am running WP 2.0.1 on a pretty busy site. My hosting company noticed that 
   the following line of code was absolutely killing my server and slowing it down
   to a crawl:
 * <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-
   f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteRule . /index.php [L] </IfModule
   >
 * Does anyone know exactly what this code does? If I disable it, my server runs
   quite a bit better but it breaks the links to all of my secondary WP pages. What
   gives?

 * It’s the normal code wp uses to start its rewrite cycle for the permalinks you
   tell it to use.

 * Is there a reason that it is causing such a huge load on the server and is there
   anything I can do to lighten said load?

 * I don’t have an answer for that. It’s not causing a problem anywhere I’m using
   wp, and hasn’t so far as I’m aware. Sorry….
