Server Error, can't access wp-admin (5 posts)

    I apologize if this is a totally dumb question. I'm not a professional coder, I'm just a law student who manages our journal website (and have been teaching myself the basics).

    I'm getting a Server Error (500) when I try to access http://www.nyumootcourtboard.com/wp-admin (and every other page on the site). I've cleared my browser's cache and cookies. Because the site is managed through our central NYU Law tech folks, I have no idea where to start with troubleshooting. I did a search, and it looks like we're hosted by Amazon.com servers.

    I switched us from a Twenty Eleven/child theme over to a customized Highwind theme over the weekend; I also updated the version of WordPress. Just before the error started, I was trying to change the Gravatar appearance settings using this "snippet" piece of code from the developer:

    add_filter( 'highwind_header_gravatar_email', 'jk_custom_gravatar_email' );
    function jk_custom_gravatar_email( $email ) {
    $email = '[email redacted]';
    return $email;

    I tried this before without incident. I've seen other pages talking about FTP and reloading my plugins, but I have no idea where to start with either, since I can't access the wp-admin login. Is there anything I can do to be proactive? What's the "for dummies" troubleshooting?

    Thanks for your help. I'm panicked about this.

    - switching to the default theme by renaming your current theme's folder inside wp-content/themes and adding "-old" to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    Please see the link above for details on how to use FTP.

    Could be bad code, could be the htaccess file but more likely it's a lower level issue. The domain nyumootcourtboard.com is available for sale. I would go to your host/domain registrar first and make sure all is well.

    Lee, I apologize -- it's nyumootcourt.com/wp-admin and its associate links, not nyumootcourtboard.

    How do I go about contacting my host/domain registrar, if it is Amazon.com? As I'm looking through the FTP troubleshooting, it's mentioning a lot of stuff that I don't know about or have access to.

    That new link definitely looks like bad code - If PHP errors were turned on on the server you would more than likely have a big fatal error warning across the screen.

    try esmi's suggestions.

    To contact domain/host providers start by trying to find some contact on emails you got when you purchased it or from when you renew it.
