We’ve had a major issue with a couple of WordPress sites we host recently. When updating to WP 3.6, the updater froze and after that the sites were toast. You couldn’t go to either website and you couldn’t even get to the dashboard. We had to get both sites restored from a previous backup.

The strange part is that we have several other WP sites that had no problems with the 3.6 update.

The only plugins they have in common are Super Simple Google Analytics, TinyMCE Advanced and WordPress SEO.

Does anybody know what could be causing this kind of thing?

  • Supposedly, if your site is built using a child-theme, updates to the parent do not affect changes to the child. Were any of the sites structured as child themes?

When you restored your broken sites with backups did that take you back to 3.5.2 (or whatever your earlier version was)?

No, we weren’t using child themes. The version we rolled back to was 3.5.2.

Did reverting to your backup successfully take you back to 3.5.2?

    Yes, it did.

Did you deactivate all plugins prior to updating?

    No, we didn’t.

See paragraph 4 in the first response:

It’s also possible that some plugins may not be compatible with 3.6 and may conflict(that is only my opinion).

Disabling the plugins before updating seems to be working for us.

    Thanks for the assistance.

I am trying to update to 3.6. I deactivated all plugins and tried the update and still get this message:

    Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.6-new-bundled.zip…

Warning: touch() [function.touch]: Unable to create file /tmp/wordpress-3.tmp because No such file or directory in /home/kevinb11/public_html/LeadershipVoices.com/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 179

Warning: unlink(/tmp/wordpress-3.tmp) [function.unlink]: Operation not permitted in /home/kevinb11/public_html/LeadershipVoices.com/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 503

Download failed.: Could not open handle for fopen() to /tmp/wordpress-3.tmp

    Installation Failed

I am not using any of the three plugins mentioned earlier in the thread. Anyone with any suggestions?
