    Hi

    Just a heads-up for a problem for which I have found a solution. The problem applies to all the popular backup plugins:

    I recently upgraded my VPS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. All my sites using UpdraftPlus would hang while backing up.

    I discovered that a function (gzopen) used by updraft is no longer available as standard, but gzopen64 does the same job!

    A simple workaround for functions.php or wp-config.php:

    if (!function_exists('gzopen')) {
        function gzopen($filename , $mode, $use_include_path = 0 )
              { return gzopen64($filename, $mode, $use_include_path);
        }
    }

    Now all my sites work correctly.

    This is a bug in Ubuntu 14.04 on 32-bit systems – https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/php5/+bug/1315888 – it was fixed in the upstream PHP project in November 2014 – https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=53829 – but for some reason Ubuntu still haven’t released a patched version of PHP.

    Yes. Can’t you put a check in your code as a work-around?

    We may well do. Each time this comes up, I think – “surely Ubuntu are going to fix their PHP install?”. But apparently, they’re not. I think 32-bit systems have now become so rare that whoever maintains PHP in Ubuntu doesn’t consider this important. That’s just a guess – it’s a very odd bug to leave unfixed for so long; Googling shows that though they’re rare in comparison to 64-bit systems, there are enough of them around for this to have caused a lot of wasted man hours.
