# Separating Subscriptions and Comment Notification

 * _I spent a half hour composing this, after spending an hour researching possible
   solutions, and when I went to submit I got a ‘Document Expired’ error message,
   and all my work was gone._
 * So I recomposed & resubmitted, got a ‘Secure Connection Failed’ error, wiped
   out my work again. Luckily this time I had saved a copy.
 * Not good.
 * I went to Mailchimp for my subscriber notifications. So I turned off my Jetpack
   subscriptions module, only to realize people making comments weren’t getting
   notification of responses which really hurts my traffic.
 * So I need to turn it back on, and realized that I could simply delete my subscribers.
   According to this, I can’t do that:
    [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/remove-a-single-subscriber-from-the-list-of-jetpack-subscribers-1](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/remove-a-single-subscriber-from-the-list-of-jetpack-subscribers-1)
 * Subscribers are giving me their proprietary information, not WordPress and not
   Jetpack. You should not have control over it. This is concerning, and even a
   bit unethical.
 * However, I then found this post, which tells me how to stipulate which of my
   blog posts are sent to subscribers, an awkward but acceptable work-around:
    [https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/](https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/)
 * The problem is, it doesn’t stipulate **which** functions.php file to use. My
   theme is actually several layered themes, and Jetpack has a long list of its
   own functions.php files.
 * And even if I knew which file to use, it doesn’t tell me where in the file to
   insert the command.
 * WP is powerful because it is easy to use by nonprogrammers. My problems here
   cannot be unusual, and I don’t understand why the solution has to be so complicated.

 * That’s an old thread. You can delete subscribers now. You can do so here:
    [https://wordpress.com/people/email-followers/](https://wordpress.com/people/email-followers/)

 * If your theme uses all these functions.php files, you can actually add a code
   snippet to any of those files.
 * However, I’d strongly recommend that you do not edit your theme files, or any
   plugin files. One you start customizing existing files, it becomes very hard
   to keep those files up to date once an update is available for your theme or
   the plugin you edited.
 * Instead of editing theme files, I’d recommend using a functionality plugin, like
   this one:
    [https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/code-snippets/)
 * I’ve just added a link to that plugin in our support documentation; hopefully
   that will help others in the future!

 * Not good indeed. Could you tell me more about where you composed the message.
   Was it in the form at the bottom of this page?

 * Could you tell me more about your browser and OS, so I can report the issue to
   the folks maintaining the WordPress.org forums?
 * Thanks!

 * And….
 * …it just happened again. Composed a long response, hit submit on this page: [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/separating-subscriptions-and-comment-notification?replies=1#post-8460609](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/separating-subscriptions-and-comment-notification?replies=1#post-8460609)

   and the work was wiped out.
 * I’m on Firefox 46.0.1, and Windows 10. Thanks for the response, don’t have time
   to recompose the whole message right now.

 * Thanks for the extra details. I’ve asked the Forums team to take a look at this.
   Until that’s fixed, I’d recommend that you install the [Lazarus add-on](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lazarus-form-recovery/)
   to never lose forms again, on this site or any other.
 * Let me know if you have any other questions about removing subscribers from your
   subscriber list.

 * It appears to be an issue with Firefox 46.0.1. Updating to 47 Beta should fix
   it. You can read more about the problem here:
