• Hey guys,
I know this isn’t directly related to wordpress but this forum has been successful to me so far. So yesterday morning I had around 185 backlink’s to my website. Last night I checked those figures again and I had almost 950 backlink’s. WTF? So I did a little digging and found that I had received over 700 backlink’s from codebetter.com. And to top it all off I checked out the pages that I had backlink’s from and I cannot find a link to my site ANYWHERE on ANY of those pages. I’m at a loss as to how/why this has happened. Think this will hurt my site in Google’s eyes? Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance.

  • “View Source” on the offending page and search for your domain. When I’ve seen this the links were in the <head> of the page where they won’t display, but, as you can see, a crawler regexing the page for link can find them. It is filthy SEO. I am pretty sure there is blackhat SEO plugin out there doing this. I am also pretty sure the idea is that you, the innocent site, will get the trackback, think “Hey, cool”, approve the trackback and give the offending site some juice.

That said, I didn’t see what I was expecting when I looked at codebetter.com, but that is a lot of code to try to read. Sometimes ‘related posts’ plugins can do this too, by publishing your link as a ‘related article’ for a few hours or days, after which time the link drops off. … could have just been a bug that has been fixed now.

I can’t demonstrate that codebetter.com is guilty of anything weird so re-check that, but the kinds of filthy links you describe, and that I know are out there, won’t hurt you unless you link back to the offending site.

Thanks for the response buddy. I checked out some of the ‘linked from’ pages and couldn’t find my URL in the source code. Im just going to pretend this didn’t happen because as soon as Google crawls those pages again I hope they do not find my links. Anyways, thanks again for the response.

I’d block code better at that point :/
