I recently moved this site to a filtered blog on a different web site. In other words, the new site’s blog has a lot more than travel on it, but with category filtering, it looks like 2 different blogs.

I have a number of WP followers on the old site and I’d like to keep them, but I don’t want them to receive posts that aren’t related to their interest in my travel writing.

Also, I have to move the followers somehow–the Jetpack migration tool only supports migrating from a wp.com site. I can create a post to notify them about the change and let them follow the new URL, but that takes me back to my first question.

Any ideas how to do this?

P.S. I had a 301 redirect on the old domain for about 30 minutes, then removed it. There’s a possibility that you will be redirected until that is cleared out. But it shouldn’t matter for the purposes of this question.

    Hi @mbernhardt,

To send emails to your subscribers only when a specific post category gets published, you can use the jetpack_subscriptions_exclude_these_categories: Exclude certain categories from ever emailing to subscribers. filter.

You find that on the page linked below, under the “Tips on using filters to customize subscription delivery” paragraph:

    https://jetpack.com/support/subscriptions/

As for the follower migration, did you try to migrate the followers already? Can you link the previous site URL so I can take a look? You also mentioned a series of 301 redirects: are they related to the site URL where your old followers are subscribed to?

Look forward to your reply, thanks!

Stef, thanks for your answer. I will check out the link you provided shortly.

Regarding migrating followers: I originally began with a wordpress.com blog, then later migrated it to my own hosting provider at https://travelingwithmikeandyvonne.com. That was a non-issue as far as taking followers with me. But now I want to migrate them to a different URL, https://mikebernhardt.net. It is also connected to my WP.com account. But there’s no migration tool to move followers from one URL on my account to another, is there?

I could create a post explaining what’s going on and invite followers to join the new Jetpack list. I can also send an invite to email followers directly. Are those my only options?

I undid the 301 redirect until this is worked out, so no worries there.

One other question regarding that category filter. My travel posts all have at least two categories: “travel” plus a destination name. The filter that makes the most sense to me is “jetpack_subscriptions_exclude_all_categories_except: [travel]”

I just want to verify that doing this means that anything with the category “travel” would send, even if it has another category attached?

    Hi @mbernhardt

We can only migrate followers when the two sites are identical. Since they didn’t sign up for the additional posts on the new site, they will need to confirm their subscription to the new site.

So yes, you can either send direct invites, or create a post inviting your followers to subscribe on the new site.

The filter that makes the most sense to me is “jetpack_subscriptions_exclude_all_categories_except: [travel]”

Yes, as long as your post includes the travel category it should send the email, even if it also includes another category.

    Hope that helps!
