• Hi all,

I just updated to the latest version of the Semicolon theme on WPEngine and got a 502 Bad Gateway error. What I’ve deduced so far is, I can recreate this error on both WPEngine’s live server and staging. I’ve turned off all plugins and still got the 502 Bad Gateway. I can switch to another theme and NOT get the error. I’m running a child theme off of the parent Semicolon theme, and if I switch to the Semicolon parent theme, also get a 502 Bad Gateway error. However, locally, I do not get the error when updating the theme.

The WPEngine folks said it either had something to do with a plugin or the theme.

“The key is that the Subscribe to Comments plugin was having trouble running a database query through your child theme. This is more an issue with the plugin’s compatibility with the theme, as opposed to a problem with the theme.”

If I’ve deactivated that plugin (and I have), shouldn’t the theme start working?

Just spoke with WPEngine’ support again, and they say it is most likely the Semicolon theme itself. Because their server is set up differently than my local environment, that can explain why I didn’t get the same error.

I was provided with a list of functions that are not allowed on WPEngine’s servers:
    enabled functions on server level

I would like to be able to update this theme.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

The theme doesn’t appear to use any of the functions in that list. What exactly does the 502 error say in your PHP error logs?
