# self pingbacks not working

 * i have a private wordpress i’m running on my own server. i use [https://wordpress.org/plugins/member-access/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/member-access/)
   to keep it private (i expect to make a portion of it public eventually). i also
   have the following settings set to true:
    “Discourage search engines from indexing
   this site” “Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article” “Allow link
   notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)”
 * i have permalinks enabled to “/%postname%/”
 * publishing a new post that includes a full link to a previous post (either in
   permalink or “?p=123” format) does not generate any comment or pingback. i don’t
   control the local network/firewall, so that could be the issue.
 * is this expected to work? how can i debug it?
 * googling suggests that the “hide from search engines” will prevent the generation
   of pingbacks — is that true? it’s not documented anywhere and is confusing/unexpected.
 * in general, i think it would be useful to have a way to mark a post as a follow
   up to another post, which would be indicated as links between both posts that
   are more specific than a comment/pingback. is there a way to do this that i’m
   missing?

 * turns out it was because of the members-access plugin.
    if i turn that off, i
   do get the self-pingbacks. however, i have to keep approving them, even though
   i have this set: “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”
 * why don’t they auto-approve once i’ve approved the first one?
