  • I haven’t logged into my WordPress in a while so things may have changed. I am current with my GoDaddy account, yet on WordPress it says my domain expired three years ago. I paid what I thought was a one-time fee to transfer the account to a self-hosted one using WP interface after I started with a free wordpress site. What do I need to do to have the interface working again. Also, when I go to my domain, first, my antivirus software says there’s a virus. And when I’ve managed to get to the site through a link to a post on the dashboard, it says there’s an error (404 – page not found). I haven’t updated anything or backed up anything. Do I need to start from scratch? Do I need to pay for something on the WordPress end? I don’t even know how to upgrade to the latest version and I don’t even know what version I have.

The fee you paid did not include lifetime renewal at your domain Registrar, and you can identify your Registrar by checking your domain here: http://www.whois.com/whois/

What do I need to do to have the interface working again.

Pay your Registrar (including the expensive late fee) and then also be certain your domain is pointed to the GoDaddy nameservers.

Also, when I go to my domain…managed to get to the site through a link to a post on the dashboard, it says there’s an error (404 – page not found).

I might be wrong about the above since I do not know how you could be accessing an expired domain.

I haven’t updated anything or backed up anything. Do I need to start from scratch?

You still have a database if your GoDaddy account is still current, but how much work would be required to bring everything up to par in whatever way/s might be necessary could depend upon many things.

Do I need to pay for something on the WordPress end?

There is no such service available from wordpress.org, and wordpress.com does not do work at self-hosted sites.

I don’t even know how to upgrade to the latest version and I don’t even know what version I have.

Are you able to see a Dashboard at your self-hosted site?

note: Your wordpress.com Dashboard is completely separate and is not in any way connected or related to your self-hosted site.

The problem is on the WordPress end of things. I own my domain, that’s not in question. But for some reason, that domain is being redirected to my bloggains.wordpress.com site which they say is expired. Maybe I’m not being clear, I had a guided transfer which I paid to wordpress for a one-time-fee, which would allow me to use the WordPress dashboard on my self-hosted site. Maybe things with WordPress have changed in the last two years since I did the guided transfer and you can no longer use the WordPress dashboard for a self-hosted site?

for some reason, that domain is being redirected to my bloggains.wordpress.com site which they say is expired.

I might be partly wrong here, but I think it is your domain registration that might be expired since wordpress.com accounts do not ever expire. At to the matter of redirection, you will have to use the “WhoIs” link to see where your domain is currently pointed (which nameservers), and then correct that, if necessary. And wherever your domain is pointed, that control is available at your Registrar…and wordpress.com (Wild West or whatever) might or might not still be your Registrar.

I did the guided transfer and you can no longer use the WordPress dashboard for a self-hosted site?

You have never been able to use your wordpress.COM Dashboard for your self-hosted site. At a self-hosted site, you can only use its own WordPress Dashboard.

How do I contact them? I am able to now see my site but the theme is not the active theme. I also have these messages in the heath check. The first one I did the step by step but am still getting this message, and I don’t have the pro version.
