Selecting multiple categories returns 404 error

I have a category called ‘upcoming events’ which list future events. I want to select multiple categories for a post (ie: upcoming events, and fashion). Event though I can check multiple categories, doing so breaks the category link. Selecting both will cause both category links to return a 404 page not found error msg. Is there a plugin to fix this?
