I am basic-competent with html/css, but new to WordPress.

I went into functions_php to investigate – I wasn’t trying to make any alterations.

Next thing is that I get a message:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘<‘ in /home/mysite/public_html/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/functions.php on line 595

    (code ended on line 593).

I may have added a line-space at the end of the code, but deffo didn’t hit the ‘<‘ – (well, not deliberately.)

Now I am completely locked out. All I get, whatever I do, is that message. I cannot get into my WP dashboard to rectify the error – and when I look for the site itself I only find the same message displayed.

Any and all help, directed at a mildly techno-vocab-challenged 60 year old, will be much appreciated.

  • Hi josnovas,

Can you copy and paste your functions.php file into a Pastebin and then post back with the link?

Also, can you provide a link to your site?

Thanks for a quick response :).

This is the file as I copied it when I first accessed it via Dashboard – something I generally do on principle – but I can’t guarantee that it is the same as caused the problem. (- i.e. if I leaned on a key after that . . .)

    And I can’t copy the actual as-it-stands-functions_php because I can’t access it!

To fix this problem, you’ll need to be able to login to your site’s FTP either way. If you can get the current version of your functions.php file via FTP then we can help you resolve your issue.

    Hi Drew

    Thank you for that guidance.

I was able to get into cpanel/FTP and correct the file – as I thought, I had added an extra line space.

But I needed that guidance as I was missing that step. Thank you again!
