 * New to word press so forgive me if this is a silly question
    I have created an
   intranet site which I want only our branches to see I have a password obviously,
   but to make sure no one external can access can I get a plug-in (or something)
   that looks for an entry in the registry before it lets you view the site?

 * No but you could try looking at some of the membership plugins.
