Support » Fixing WordPress » Searchable WordPress.org site

  • Hi all,

Apologies if this should have been posted somewhere else, so please excuse my naiveity.

I’m new to WordPress and I’m a little confused between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. I bought a domain name a while back which is Linux hosted and comes with a range of free software, such as WordPress. I installed it but not to the main page as I wanted to keep the homepage seperate so I installed it to /blog.

I created a WordPress.com account which automatically gave me a blog on there as well and I also linked my hosted blog as well.

My WordPress.com created blog is showing on there website as a searchable blog but my “offsite” one isn’t. Obviously I’m thinking theres no point in having a blog if people cant ever read it but wondering if I’m doing something wrong as it doesnt appear either on Google or the WordPress site?

    Many Thanks in advance.

    Paul.

  • Do you mean that in the admin-panel you see “Search enigines blocked”?.
When in the admin panel you go to Settings>Privacy and choose for I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers and Save changes, then your site will be searched by Google and others.
    That’s all.
If this is not what you mean, please specify.

Hi Fokkio, the options you mentioned are set fine within the admin panel but my blog doesnt appear on Google, or at least that I’m able to see. Also I assumed that as its a WordPress site, and its linked to my WordPress.com account, that my blogs would appear on WordPress.com as well for people to search but this does not seem to be the case. I assume I’m either doing something wrong, or ONLY WordPress.com blogs appear on their search and on the site itself, if that makes sense?

    Thanks

    Paul.

    Hi Paul.
My site is also not searchable on the wordpress.com site. But I would bother more about Google. Have you tried to search your full url in Google. If you find your site is indexed by Google.
If you want to rank higher in Google try the AllInOne SEO-plugin. And give it some time to get higher. Post regurarly on your blog.
To be sure your site is indexed by Google search for add url to Google and make your site known to Google.

I hope this is an answer to your question.

Thanks Fokkio, I was wondering if it might be that I decided to make the blog url http://www.mywebsite.co.uk/blog instead of the default URL.

I have installed the plugin as suggested. Doing a full Google search for the exact URL doesnt return anything at all. I cant find how to see if my site is indexed by Google….

    Thanks for your help.

    Paul.

If you tried to search your full url in Google and there are no results yoyr site is not indexed by Google.
The address of your blog is not the problem (…/blog).
Try this: http://www.google.com/submit_content.html and add your url to Google.
And what you can do is to go in the Settings section of the admin-panel to the Allinone SEO-plugin check if it’s enabled and fill in the title, description and keywords.
Then give it some time to appear in the Google results.

Thanks Fokkio, I have added this and also submitted a sitemap via XML to Google as well. Hopefully this will resolve it. Shame it cant appear on WordPress.com as well but we cant have everything 🙂
