Scriptaculous Inclusion in Most Plugins

  • As you may know, scriptaculous scripts are already included in the wp-includes folder of WordPress. So I don’t understand why most plugins developers don’t just re-use those files instead of including their own which just takes up more space and could cause potential conflicts with other plugins.

    Any thoughts?

  • Probably, those are plugins that were written before that JS has been introduced into the core WP files.

Even the new plugins are written to use its own files instead of using included ones; e.g., AJAX Comments and Social Bookmarks.

If I was writing a plugin that required functionality from scriptaculous, and I wanted the plugin to work with both the 2.0.x (which does not provide it) and the current version branches of WordPress, I would probably decide to include it.

Inclusion is fine, but I think they should at least check to see if they are already included perhaps by checking the version of WordPress.
