I am looking for information on how to find out why I am getting a “Saving Failed” error when changing styles.
Hi @keempoo you can troubleshoot by deactivating all plugins temporarily including WP Super Cache
Let me know how that goes?
I deactivated all plugins I still get a “Saving Failed” error in the Editor. My hosting is Dreamhost who did the WordPress install.

Hi @keempoo I’m able to save templates on my site, I currently am using the TT3 theme and the Gutenberg plugin is active.
- Are you trying to save a template that came with the theme or this is a custom template you created?
- What is the title of the template you are trying to save? Templates that are using non-Latin characters sometimes fail to save.
Hi! I am trying to save the Global Style “Aubergine” (see image). I have now installed the Gutenberg plugin but I get the same error.

Hi @keempoo when you try to make changes to other templates do you get the same error or its only this one?
Hi!
– I can not save my theme with any Global Style (Aubergine, Block Out, Canary, Electric, etc.)
– I can change colors individually for buttons, typography, etc. and the site will update correctly
– I tried selecting a Global Style and then changing one element (color of type) to see if it would save. It would not.
– This problem exists with this theme on another website/url I have
– This problem does not exist when changing Global Styles with another theme
There is nothing on this staging site if you would like log in credentials.

Hi @keempoo – Just for your info, forum volunteers are not permitted to accept login credentials and can be banned from the forums for doing so. For security reasons it’s not a good idea to offer them to people you don’t know. 🙂
Could you please let me know:
- What version of WordPress are you using?
- What PHP version is the server running your site running?
Thanks!
Thanks for the info about the credentials. I think the issue is definitely on my end as I just noticed that Global Styles are failing to load on a completely separate theme not related to Automattic at all.
I am running on WordPress 6.1.1, PHP 7.4
I see you’re with Dreamhost – some folks in this thread were also getting saving failures related to Global Styles, but disabling Dreamhost’s “Extra Web Security” option solved it – see here for more details. I’d also encourage you to report the issue directly to Dreamhost so they can look at why their security setting is causing this problem.
If that doesn’t help and you need a hand, please start a new thread in the Gutenberg plugin forum and folks will be glad to have a peek.

Just to clarify, Twenty Twenty-Three isn’t an Automattic theme, it’s a WordPress.org default theme created by various WordPress.org community members. 🙂
This worked! I will definitely reach out to Dreamhost and let them know about this issue.
@keempoo Glad that worked! Let me know how it goes with Dreamhost. Hopefully they can get this sorted, as it’s tripped up a few people now!
