So when I try to save a draft the button goes into a never-ending loop. This doesn’t let me see a preview.

What happens is that some plugins seem to not work with Gutenberg as there are icons indicating that something is updating (same way the save draft button is).

I don’t know how to explain it better. But I’ve created a detailed screenshot.

    drive.google.com/open?id=1yF8wiO6xeQ6-Mbgz7s_gMJxG4lvNfImo

I know links are not allowed, just copy paste this to address bar and it should open the image.

I’ve tried to disable these plugins, but it does nothing as there’s always something else that prevents the button from understanding that save has been made.

Good news is that it actually saves a draft (as seen in revisions), but the button seems to not understand that saving has finished. The only way out of it is F5.

    I’m running Windows 10, Firefox Quantum 62.0b13 (64-bit)
All the plugins are updated to the latest version.

This behavior is also replicated on Microsoft Edge 42.17134.1.0

    So it’s definitely plugin in-compatibility?

I can’t disable everything as I am testing it on my main website and it runs on a premium themeforest theme where there are plugins required for the theme to work.

Hmm, I suspect something else is going on here, I installed SEO Framework on my test site, and saving appears to be working just fine.

    Hi,

Then I am honestly baffled, because I’ve no idea what else I can test. I’ve tried clearing browser cache and cookies. I’ve tried changing my DNS. My last attempt will be installing a fresh WP installation and testing it there.

Are you running Windows 10, or Mac?

    Thread Starter Vjatsheslav

    (@pixelprofits)

Yes, I can replicate this on a fresh WordPress install with only Gutenberg and SEO Framework running. I seriously, have no clue now.

I’ve tested it on a demo install at poopy.life. I can replicate the bug there as well. So it seems that this is strictly a Firefox/Edge problem and possibly on my machine only as there’s no such issue reported anywhere else?

Can this be caused by a firewall/anti-virus/htaccess/hosts file?

FOUND IT! Turns out it’s my Anti-virus (Bitdefender Free Antivirus 1.0.12.41) blocking something. I’ve excluded my website from protection and now it works like a charm.

    The mystery has been solved!

That’s quite interesting, did BitDefender show you which rules/what it detected which made it block things?

    No, no popups, or anything.

Peculiar indeed ,we’ll do some tests at least with it then, thank you so much for the extensive testing and troubleshooting, I truly appreciate it!

I had this same problem because I had not turned off Ghostery while editing my WordPress site. Apparently it was blocking a script needed to save drafts. I turned off Ghostery (and uBlock Origin) for my site and saving returned to normal.

I’m using Chrome, and I have the same problem. Unfortunately, I don’t have the plugins installed that you’ve named above, so deactivating them isn’t an option for me. I do use Wordfence for security, though. Should I try deactivating that when I’m editing? I don’t like the idea that I have to disable my virus protection plugin just to edit/write posts or pages. I KNOW I’ll forget to turn it back on if I do so, and then my site will be out there without protection. Any advice on how to fix this without disabling virus protection? Thanks so much.

The only way to know is to disable Wordfence and see if you can save. I’ve been hosting sites for twenty years. Turning Wordfence off for a few minutes is very unlikely to pose a risk.

Well, it’s difficult to tell what can be the problem, since my problem was Bitdefender. To solve it I simply added my website as an exclusion to Bitdefender and it solved the issue.

First, I would advice you to install a troubleshooting plugin, which allows you to check for issues without actually disabling anything: https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/

Then if this doesn’t help you determine the problem, I suggest you try either turning off your anti-virus protection/malware protection to see if it fixes the issue.

There’s not much risk in turning protection off or a couple minutes. Unless you visit malicious websites often. Plus, Windows 10 is quite secure with their own built-in antivirus/malware so there’s very little risk.

    Hope this helps.

By the way the problem with Bitdefender hasn’t been fixed yet as of WordPress 5.0 for me at least.

While I see this topic marked as resolved, I wanted to add my experience. I too am a Bitdefender user. When editing my site in Firefox, it would never complete a draft update. In Chrome, it worked, but sporadically and did not save as it should. I added the exception to BD and it worked immediately.

Before installing plugins or other debug work, I’d recommend looking at your antivirus – it could well be happening in other applications.
