I’m unable to install the Satellite theme on my self-hosted site.

The following error message comes up:

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the theme…

This theme requires a parent theme. Checking if it is installed…

The parent theme could not be found. You will need to install the parent theme, scrawl, before you can use this child theme.

    Theme installed successfully.

I already installed the “Scrawl” theme (https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/scrawl/) But I still get the same error.

The blog I need help with is jrocas.com.ph.

  • ummmmm why are you looking at themes on wordpress.com?

If you wanna run wordpress locally on a server. You need to be only concerned with wordpress.org

You can see the themes for open source WP here
    https://wordpress.org/themes/

The theme is also available for self-hosted sites.

@webdev2087 – Many themes on WordPress.COM are now available for download and use on self-hosted sites. There’s a download link in the sidebar on the theme’s page on WordPress.COM It’s perfectly fine to use them and the WP.COM theme team supports them on these forums as well.

@hayrocas – I’m going to try installing those themes on a test site to see if it works for me.

@wpyogi my bad. When did this happen? I just got back into WP.

That be said @jhayrocas maybe your download is corrupt try to download and install again.

Okay, found the problem – the style.css file for Satellite has a mis-match Template line for scrawl. You can fix it like this:

With any theme active, go to Appearance > Editor and on the right side at the top in the pull-down menu, find the Satellite theme and select it.

Then you’ll see a list of files below that – click on the style.css file – the file will then be editable in the window.

In the top section of that file, you’ll see this line:

    Template: scrawl

    Change that to:

    Template: scrawl-wpcom

Scroll to the bottom of that window and click Save changes

Now the message about this missing file should be gone and you should be able to activate Satellite theme.

@webdev2087 – no problem – probably about a year ago – but it’s not been that widely used or known. Kinda cool though, huh?

@wpyogi Thanks! I knew that line in the stylesheet was fishy. Not sure how to fix it though before this.

Yeah, that line has to match exactly the name on the parent theme directory – and I think the WP.COM theme directories get renamed for the self-hosted versions – so I’m guessing this was just an oversight that this didn’t get changed too. I’ll tag this post so the WP.COM theme support team will see it and fix the download.

    @wpyogi

Very cool actually. It’s like a secret treasure chest has been unlocked. I’m surprised it has not been more talked about and widely known.
