Sandbox header image width

I’m using the Sandbox theme and I’m trying to add a header image, but can’t get it to size properly. If I set it as the background image in CSS it appears at the correct size automatically, but if I actually add it to header.php (ie so that I can have alt text and such things) it won’t display properly regardless of what width I apply to it. Can anyone help?
