Safe to change subdomain on site. (6 posts)

    I'm running WordPress Multisite.

I would like to change the subdomain of one of my sites, subdomain1.my-domain.com, to subdomain2.my-domain.com.

It does seems to work, but when I export the entire database and run through the SQL-file I do find some references to the old subdomain, subdomain1.my-domain.com.

Is it safe to just change the subdomain of an existing site or are there things to be aware of?

  2. If you change the LENGTH of your subdomain name, things can break. But that's about it.

So, changing it from subdomain1 to newsubdomain would not be so good.
    How come?

  4. Data serialization (which is to say the length of your URL is stored in the DB in various places).

IF you really wanted to do that, use http://interconnectit.com/124/search-and-replace-for-wordpress-databases/ to search/replace.

Ok. Shouldn't the feature for renaming subdomains be disabled in WordPress, if it can break the system?

  6. Eh. We don't stop you from doing it in SingleSite (yet) and it causes the same problems ;)

(We have a ticket out to prevent you from doing it in all types of WP, though, so maybe one day we'll hide it. There are benefits to it, though).
