    Hello there-
I preface this with the disclaimer that I am not any sort of IT person and do not know how to add in lines of code or anything like that!

For the past two months, I have been running MAMP and locally hosting a Word Press website that I am (was) building for my business. I usually left MAMP running, never had any server issues and book marked my WordPress URL and accessed it everyday with no issues.. until this past Monday.

Over the weekend, I installed several Apple updates and cleared my history, which I am not sure if I had done since working on the site ( bad habit I know). I am not sure if what I am experiencing is related to either of those two occurrences, but they were the only things out of the ordinary that happened on my computer.

So, after restarting my computer several times (remember I am a tech novice and this is usually my solution to everything) and reading some forums, I uninstalled and reinstalled MAMP- both Apache and SQL servers were showing as running and connected before I un and reinstalled but I thought this was a good idea for some reason-bad idea clearly- and re-downloaded WordPress. Good news- I can access my local host again via my previously bookmarked URL Bad news: its a brand, spanking new Word Press site- mine is gone. In my inexperience and rush to try to fix this issue, did I delete my original word press content or can it be found somewhere.

Thanks for any insight- good or bad!

Using the link on the MAMP WebStart page, open up phpMyAdmin. In the left hand column it should list the databases you have. If it lists more than one, you may be ok.

Let me know what you find there and we’ll proceed to the next step.

Yeah the only one listed is for the new database that I created when I reinstalled everything yesterday….

If you ‘uninstalled’ MAMP, you ‘uninstalled’ everything, including your site files and database.

A tidbit or two for going forward:

    – WordPress and the like are not like a regular computer program that are installed and double-clicked to run
    – it is a web application framework consisting of literally hundreds of files
    – it also requires a database to run
    – when you remove the local server, MAMP in your case, where all this is located, you remove the site(s) that were there too as well as the database server and the databases
    – as you have found out, re-installing MAMP once it has been removed is the same as a brand new install
    – if you would have left the previous MAMP there, it would have left the contents of the site and databases; this is how updates to MAMP are applied
