Safari and Quicktags
Only having recently switched to Safari for some browsing I noticed that Quicktags were missing. A quick search revealed that Safari had problems with Quicktags so they were disabled.
Intrigued I removed the browser check and tested each tag I have … there was nothing wrong. Safari handled them fantastically.
Exactly what is the supposed problem? I’m using Safari 2.0.2 and WordPress 1.5 (not sure how to check exact version number).
Try the quicktags in Firefox to see the difference. Basically, the Quicktags do work in Safari, but not as well as they do in Firefox, so their full functionality cannot be utilized when using them under Safari. I’m not sure why the developers considered that as proper grounds for removing them entirely, but it’s a mute point since the quicktags will be replaced with a WYSIWYG editor in WP v1.6.
For those just tuning in, you can find the hack for re-enabling quicktags under Safari here:
As I recall, “the proper grounds” was based upon the repeated postings by Safari users complaining that WP did not work properly… it got old explaining that WP was not at fault. That was reason enough for me. It did not stop the postings about problems, but they went form “WP doesn’t…” to “Safari doesn’t…”
Thanks for the information … I’m happy with the way they work under Safari and I “hacked” it my own way before knowing there was one.
I’m looking forward to version 1.6 … I just hope upgrading a 1.5 site will be easy … I’ve invested a lot of time in modifications for one or two sites (all documented for myself).
