When WordPress is located in a subdirectory on the same level as the content, s2member-o.php fails to load, as it searches for the wp-settings.php. The search only searches upward (or downward depending on how you look at it) from the current directory and will never find the wp-settings.php.

This is a setup that follows Mark Jaquith's WP-Skeleton (https://github.com/markjaquith/WordPress-Skeleton) setup.
