Ever since I updated one of my plugins on 9/8/11 (Sharaholic’s Sexy Bookmarks), Feedburner has refused to update my feed and says it’s invalid.

To isolate and fix the problem, I have disabled Sexy Bookmarks and Feedburner Feedsmith. My feed (writingforward.com/feed) validates at the Feed Validator, but Feedburner says it’s not valid. I’ve tried pinging and resyncing but all three of my posts since 9/8 remain unrecognized.

Both my rss and atom feed links bring up a page of xml. However, my feedburner feed (feeds.feedburner/WritingForward) shows my home page.

Here is the exact error Feedburner cites:

The URL you entered does not appear to be a valid feed. We encountered the following problem: Unknown feed format encountered (The root element is [Element: <html [Namespace: http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml%5D/>%5D)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Did you try adding it with the “www”?

    Hi Jenz,

You suggested adding the www but I’m not sure where you mean I should add that. The URL without www redirects to the URL with it.

    Thanks,
    Melissa

I would add it within Feedburner. I am not sure – but I took a look and your feed does validate. Since that is the case – Feedburner definitely is not happy about something. By adding in the www (if you do not already have it) in your Feedburner settings. (Just trying to take care of the easy things first). I would also check this out if you have not already:

I’ve had the same feed burned at Feedburner for almost four years and in the original feed field (under edit feed details), the www is included, so I don’t think that is the issue. My sense is that the problem is with Feedburner (not my site) since the feed validates but Feedburner says it doesn’t. I wonder if Feedburner is looking at a cache of my feed (even though I’ve resynced). Maybe resync is failing, in which case I don’t know of any fix since there is no way to contact the folks at Feedburner.

The feed at http://writingforward.com/feed is not an RSS feed – it’s an Atom feed.

    Thanks Esmi.

The feed (writingforward.com/feed) has been my original feed for several years. Feedburner says “You should not change “Original Feed” unless you move your original feed to a new domain or a new location on your existing server.”

I have found the following feeds, which are installed with WordPress:

    writingforward.com/feed/rss
    writingforward.com/feed (appears to be atom)
    http://www.writingforward.com/feed/atom

You seem to be suggesting that I change my original feed (field on Feedburner) to writingforward.com/feed/rss. Is that right? I don’t see how that would help fix the error since my original feed has worked fine for years and the issue Feedburner is having seems to deal with validation rather than feed type.

I went ahead and changed the original feed to writingforward.com/feed/rss and got the exact same error: The URL does not appear to reference a valid XML file.

So, I changed it back again (to writingforward.com/feed).

At this point, I have validated the feed and the XML file and I’m getting more and more convinced that the problem is Feedburner.

But they have no option for contacting them, reporting problems or bugs, or getting help other than a forum (google group) where nobody seems to respond.

I was actually recommending you try to add in the “www” to your feed URL just to make sure Feedburner did not have a problem with the redirect.

The URL I sent too had information about signing up for their FeedBulletin which shows you any errors they find with your feed (I would check it out – this might be what you need)

One other thing to check – does your feed work with ALL plugins disabled? Perhaps feed burner is not happy with another plugin.

I have resolved this issue. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a hack.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this. All your suggestions eventually led me to the solution.
