• I just setup a new WP install on my VPS, and noticed that the Other WordPRess News dashboard widget is giving me an RSS Error.

RSS Error: The data could not be converted to UTF-8. You MUST have either the iconv or mbstring extension installed. Upgrading to PHP 5.x (which includes iconv) is highly recommended.

I have other WP installs on this same server, and Apache configuration, and the Other WP News dashboard widget seems to work for them.

Given that these widgets use SimplePie to grab the RSS feeds, why would it be working in one widget area but not another on the same page, when both of this widgets work on a different install of WP on the same server?

  • Are you noting that there are errors when running your site or that you see this is the “Other WordPress News” section of the admin panel? IF just the latter, use screen options to hide this section.

It definitely isn’t an issue as I generally hide it, but this is the first time I have seen it happen, and when I checked the other WP installations on the same server, that widget works on the other installs, just not this new one.

I just noticed this too on 3 different blogs I host, and then when I googled the issue I found this thread. Seems like a bigger issue? All my bogs are on separate servers and are running the latest PHP.

Same problem on our hosting with php 5.3.3, iconv and mbstring enabled. All client sites have this error. This is independent of wordpress version.

Yep, another with the same problem. A new install giving the same error message while other older installs on the same server, same configuration are fine.

Hmm… I’m in the same boat. First my incoming links section went down, similar to:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/incoming-links-error-message-1/page/2?replies=60

Now my other wordpress news section went. My dash is getting full of error messages!

I have the same problem in various wordpress installations.

Same here! All of a sudden, it just stopped working like it should. I think it happened yesterday or today.

I have the problem on one domain and not the other running on the same server, so go figure

I re-configured the dev blog and now the errors gone and no feed data.

Same here; RSS Feed Error is only in the Other WordPress News widget for Planet WordPress… Seems that perhaps this is system wide for WordPress? Just started this morning and then later this afternoon it started working right, and now, it’s gone again =( I love this feed and will not “hide” it – I am anxious for a fix however! =)

This seems to now be corrected, one can only assume some server in the middle was having issues?

I just had a look at my blogs, seems to be working now. Might have been a caching issue.

I also started getting the error message (from the FeedWordPress plugin) below in the last few days:

The data could not be converted to UTF-8. You MUST have either the iconv or mbstring extension installed.

My web host increased the PHP memory limit from 32MB to 96MB and that seems to have fixed the problem.

I increased the PHP memory, and now several days later the problem came back. I restarted apache again, no help. Any other ideas?

I had the same problem on two of my blogs. I just clicked on the “configure” button above the widget and then click “submit” and the error went away. No other changes were necessary.
