Plug in? Naw. RSS by category is built in.
http:
//domain/blog/category/feed/
Well, that gets you your feed. To read the feed into another WP blog, check out the Syndication plugins at http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Syndication
my external site isn’t worpress. Will it still work? I’ll take a look at that page, but that’s a lot to digest. *grin*
for instance i’d love to post anything in the romance category to the news page at singletitles.com. <– isn’t wordpress. 🙂
Thanks bunches, though!
The first part will work (the RSS that your blog can emit is already there).
The second part (Syndication plugins) does your non WP site no good. Alas.
Are they on the same server, by chance?
If not, you’ll have to do some digging at other forums, depending on what the external site is built with, for RSS imports.
They’re on the same server.
The other site is built in php by my dh. Basically as content management system. Now that I know I can get RSS for each category I think I’ll get him to show me how to add an RSS feed to the CMS.
Thanks again.
One last question……. you said it would be category/feed/
I’m still trying to figure out the way WP does urls. Mine shows up as http://www.book-bee.com/?cat=3
So when you say category, does that mean the actual category name, ie book-bee.com/romance or would book-bee.com/?cat=3 work?
Sorry for the dumb questions. 🙂
Ally
Ah, good question! I assumed (incorrectly) that you might be using “pretty” permalinks. As you aren’t, your category feeds look like:
http
://www.book-bee.com/wp-rss2.php?cat=15
Where the last number is the category number. That format will get your a feed in rss 2.0 format.
More on that and other formats can be found in the codex at: WordPress_Feeds
THANKS!
I tried to use pretty links but for some reason that didn’t work very well. 🙂 Maybe b/c it was in a subdomain at the time? Who knows. 🙂
Using_Permalinks is a good place to start if you decide to go down that road again for “pretty permalinks”. I dunno that it really much matters anymore. Search engines don’t seem to care and the SEO experts don’t seem too concerned either. But hey…
If you have issues, there’s a good troubleshooting section on that page I linked. And, of course, you can start another new thread here.
Cheers!
