I have my site jrandolphsteele.com running on hostgator using 3.5.1, twenty twelve (+child) theme, akismet and W3 Super Cache plugins, and Google adsense. I now find myself more than a little confused regarding some of the things I should do next and searching for answers has not helped. Mainly because the information that I find is often conflicting and it is difficult to determine what is applicable to my wordpress version and theme versus other versions/themes. I am hopeful that someone on this forum can offer some advice.

    1) Does Super Cache and .htaccess negate the need for a robots.txt and, if not, what should robots.txt look like?

Some search results say yes and others say no and others say robots.txt is already there by virtue of installing WP (it is not in my case). Specfically; I have modified content.php to only display excerpts on the home and general category pages. It seems to me that the crawlers should skip the home/category pages and not the individual posts. Yet; I want WP to still be as SEO friendly as it is designed to be.

    2) Do I need to, should I, add some meta infomation to the header?

Again; the information I have found is conflicting/confusing. If I were to describe my site it would be something like: Electic commentary, opinions, essays, poetry, and more about anything and everything. When I defined my categories I did add a description for each similar to that. So far as I can determine that only shows up on the category index pages. I would like the search engines to find/list my site under the general categories listed in that site description as well as, or instead of, the more specific categories I defined such as Technology. I can’t figure out how to accomplish that.

    3) Should I add a link to favicon.ico to the header and what folder should it really be in?

I placed the favicon.ico in the root site (WP) folder and it shows up fine in my browser as expected. But; I’ve read that it should be linked via the header information. I’ve also read that it should be placed in the Content, or Themes, or specific Theme, or child Theme folder(s). I don’t want to put it everywhere if I should not be doing so.

    4) SEO plugin or not?

I’ve considered it, specifically yoast, but again there is conflicting and confusing information. Firstly; WP is supposed to be, I think, already very search engine friendly. It seems like adding a SEO plugin would be overkill. Secondly; it seems that there might be some problems with WP Super Cache and SEO plugins both active. Finally; I can’t figure out if yoast, or another, SEO plugin would help me resolve the first 3 questions/issues or not.

I realize that it is a lot to ask and that this might not be the best forum to ask the questions. I’m new to blogging and WP and somewhat lost at the moment. Any advice, info on best practices, or links to help me find my way would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • The best place to seek answers for your questions is the appropriate forums and help links at your Google Webmaster Tools account. If you find anything specific to WordPress, you may report here. Other questions are generally ignored because these forums are for providing support for WordPress core software, and plugins and themes downloaded from WordPress.org repository.

    Krishna,

Thank you for responding. I can understand my question being moved from troubleshooting to miscellaneous but I have to, respectfully, disagree with your response. As as aside, please excuse the defaulted avatar. I really am nicer than it depicts.

Perhaps I was not as clear on the detail provided with each question as I needed to be. But; each relates specifically to WordPress and more specifically to my particular implementation. It isn’t that I don’t understand the basics of how crawlers work and so forth. It is that I don’t understand how WordPress (“SEO friendly”) works, or doesn’t, with respect to what I want presented to the crawlers.

For example; in viewing Google Webmaster it appears that they crawled the home page. That is not necessarily a bad thing but because I modified the WordPress theme to display only excerpts it is not a particularly good thing either. Additionally; in searching for help via WordPress the information returned regarding robots.txt with respect to WordPress is conflicting and confusing. For example; it informs me that WordPress provided a robots.txt. In my case it did not. Why? Is it because it isn’t needed now because it is being handled through .htaccess and WordPress’s built-in SEO is based upon that? If I add a robots.txt will that then disrupt the built-in SEO?

All of my questions specifically relate to WordPress and how WordPress does, or doesn’t, do things. And, what I should/need, or shouldn’t/need not, do with respect to modifying my WordPress based site to achieve the results I am trying to achieve.

I am certain that if I were to repost the same questions on, ss you suggest, Google Webmaster, forum I would be redirected to ask the questions here. These are, in fact, all WordPress or plugin issues. As you yourself state this forum is for “providing support for WordPress core software, and plugins and themes downloaded from WordPress.org repository”.

Again; thanks. But I think you are misunderstanding. I accept responsbility for that and will gladly attempt to clarify but I don’t know how to be any clearer.

Hopefully; you, or someone else, will be able to help me out.

I really am nicer than it depicts.

You are, like every other member, a very respectful member. We shall always treat you nicely. 🙂

But I think you are misunderstanding.

Not at all. You may be feeling that way just because you could not get the desired answers. You need to wait for someone else to chime in. Questions on these forums are replied to by volunteers who are ready to help out. There are no paid staff. There is no compulsion on anyone.

Perhaps I was not as clear on the detail provided with each question as I needed to be.

It happens when you post a bunch of questions. The solution is to post each question individually so that someone who knows the answer may respond to you. For example, questions related to a particular plugin is either answered by one who actually knows about the plugin or you can post the question to the plugin’s dedicated section of these forums.
So, as you have listed your questions, you may post them separately so that you will have a better chance of being replied to. 🙂

    Thank you Krishna.

Your point is understood. Sometimes I forget the lessons of my youth such as “the hurrier you go the behinder you get”.

I will put my impatience aside, consider this resolved, and follow your advice. It does make very good sense.

Thank you for understanding what I wrote!
And I really mean what I wrote! 🙂
