I’ve had this plugin for several years with no problem. Abruptly Monday I noticed that my images were no longer displaying the retina version — even though the retina images still exist and I made no changes to any of the settings. When I checked the error logs, I saw this message repeated several times:

“Retina: This status is not recognized:”

    I also saw this error:

“PHP Warning: Illegal string offset ‘file’ in /home/***/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-retina-2x/core.php on line 1167”

I should note that there is definitely no conflict with other plugins — problem persisted even after I deactivated all of my other plugins.

    Hi @smw2006,

This is not a bug in the plugin, and it’s not a conflict neither. It means that you gave a Media entry for which the metadata is broken or missing. I could have probably skipped that Media entry without any warning like this, but this helps to debug issues related to Retina as well.

One way to resolve broken metadata is to run Regenerate Thumbnails, this kind of tools also generate the metadata (in fact, WordPress does when the thumbnails are being regenerated).

I installed and ran Regenerate Thumbnails, but it had no impact. Retina images still not showing up, and still getting the same “Retina: This status is not recognized:” message. Plus I don’t know why or how the metadata would have become broken or missing all of a sudden, especially on every single image — including images that had been displaying properly before.

Are there any other possible explanations?

The plugin wasn’t updated for 5 months (it’s perfectly stable, so right now I am looking more into simplifying it and removing options which are more or less useless nowadays). So when this issue started to appear?

It would be interesting to know what happens at that moment; the plugin itself can’t start crashing after a certain point of time, so something else changed.

Do you get those errors also all the time, non-stop? Are you still getting the PHP Warning? It could be interesting to have your log of all the latest 20-30 errors to see if we can see a pattern.

Issue started soon after I updated my theme, but I don’t see any obvious reason why that would cause this.

Haven’t seen same errors on the error log in several days, so I don’t know what to make of that. **(UPDATE — scratch that, I’m again seeing the “Retina: This status is not recognized:” message)**

Still not seeing retina images with one exception — on mobile, featured images are still showing properly. But thumbnails on mobile + all images on desktop/tablet not showing retina versions.

This issue still not resolved for me. I’d like to get the images displaying properly again, so any help would be appreciated.
