restricting all docs in a category

    so my only option is restricting all of the files if I don’t want certain roles to be able to see/download?

    You can only restrict to one role.

    Everyone
    Registered Users Only
    At Least Contributor Role
    At Least Author Role
    At Least Editor Role
    At Least Administrator Role

    Can I add custom roles to this? ie each set of folder docs have their own role? or can anyone suggest a better plugin to manage documents based on categories and roles?

    Nope it doesn’t support custom role. I seldom use others plugin so I can’t recommend.
