Restricting access to wp-content

  • Hi Everyone

I run a photography site and I am currently having issues with copyright infringement and I think it’s due to my images coming up in google image search results (which is fine and great for SEO) but then people are able to click through to the actual jpg file and download it (e.g. http://website.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/image.jpg)

I would like to stop them from being able to access the actual file and instead redirect them through to my homepage. Failing that I would just like to have “Forbidden” come up on screen when they try to access the file.

I’m a very basic level user with WP and HTML/CSS coding so the more layman’s terms you can use the better 😀

    Many thanks

  • You may try watermarking your images, password protection, using very low resolution images, etc. as almost all images on the internet can be downloaded. Whatever protection tools you may use, people may find a method to bypass it.

    Try this plugin for watermarking:
This one is recently updated. I had tested and it hadn’t worked for me in the past but I think they probably just sorted that out in the recent update, I am due to go back and test again.

There is a few other plugins but haven’t found one that works for me, some of them seem to be buggy. I have a notification setup for the watermark keyword right now in the forum as I am very actively trying to find my solution here. If that plugin works for you, please post and let me know 🙂

** Some e-com plugins have built in file upload protections (to protect digital downloads), something to consider.

This talks about the file system:

    Best of luck.
