Users who are not on the whitelist have been accessing our site. Several from Europe and the states. Site’s updated. Any ideas? Thanks,

@jonathanedwardmann Can you provide any more details on how you have restriction set up? I can definitely access the site that is referenced in this support ticket but not sure if that’s the site you are trying to restrict or not.

We have 25 university campuses who are whitelisted. If a blacklist attempts access or if a whitelisted users is off-campus, we redirect to https://astpublications.com/institutional-log-in/

Lately however we’ve had blacklisted people access the entire site. Thanks

Is this a single WordPress site or a multisite setup?

If a single site, what restriction settings do you have in place under Settings > Reading?

Or if a multisite, what restriction settings do you have in place under Network Admin > Settings > Network Settings?

I’m assuming you have selected Restrict site access to visitors who are logged in or allowed by IP address and then Redirect them to a specified web address selected.

How are you whitelisting each campus? Is this through a single IP address per campus or some sort of range?

    Correct.

Single site, we don’t log in users, they simply gain access if connected to campus wifi, or logged in via university library proxy.

We whitelist via both ranges and single addresses. The vast majority are ranges.

I’m assuming this is probably the culprit. When whitelisting ranges, anyone that has an IP address in that range will have access. IP ranges are often shared across ISPs, so you run the risk of allowing people that you may not want.

Makes sense, thank you. If I find an IP blocker plugin to take care of the blacklisted users, would that interfere with Restricted Site Access?

I don’t believe so but does depend on how that plugin blocks IP addresses. In most scenarios they should be able to work in tandem but I can’t guarantee that. If you find one you like and have issues, let me know and I can probably take a look to see what the conflicts are.
