Support » Fixing WordPress » Restoring WP from folders possible?

  • I’m using fatcow.com and they have a self installer of wordpress. I accidentally installed two of the same and tried to uninstall one and it wiped my entire wordpress.

There is a backup/restore feature, but that only restores all the files and folders. I ran that backup but my wordpress still doesn’t work.

So, basically, I have all my old wp-content, wp-include, etc folders but once I try to restore those folders nothing works. Any ideas how to restore all my posts categories, pictures, etc when you just have all the folders and files?

    Thanks

Do you have a database backup? Does your host have a database backup?

They should, thats what they said. I have to try to locate it.

I can’t seem to locate it, I’ll contact their support. If I do find the backup do I restore all the files, then edit the wp-config.php file, or do I do a fresh install, then edit the wp-config.php file?

You’re looking for an .sql backup. I’d suggest setting up a new database, and then importing the .sql file into the new database. Make a note of site url in the wp_options table. It will indicate which folder your WP files should be in. Once you have that, re-install all WP files & folders into the appropriate place on your domain, then amend wp-config.php to point to the newly restored database.

In theory, you should then be all good again.

Okay, I found the .sql backup. the MySQL converts it to a .dmp, I don’t know how to import that, or how to import an .sql?

sorry .dmp.gz after unzip its a .dmp

another question, if I can’t get a backup of my MYSQL database are all my posts, images, etc gone then?

If you’ve found the .sql backup, you should be able to import that directly into an empty database.

if I can’t get a backup of my MYSQL database are all my posts, images, etc gone then?

Yes – which is why this sql dump is so important.

Okay, I have the sql dump. Hopefully I can figure out how to import.
