    Hey there,

Do I understand it correctly that I cannot restore a backup of a website to a new hosting without the Migrator plugin? At least all guides I could find kinda point this way.

    Here’s what I did:
    – Backed up everything with UpDraft at the old hosting
    – Changed the TTL on the A record at the old hosting
    – Established the domain and the website space a the new provider
    – Set the A record to the new IP
    – Installed a plain WordPress
    – Installed the UpDraft plugin
    – Pointed UpDraft to the Google drive
    – After uploading it complained about filesize…
    – Nevertheless I started the restore
    – It restored the database but failed at everything else

Is that the correct procedure? Or doe I need the Migrator plugin for this to work? Strange enough it did the database. And that’s the one thing that has different naming on the new hosting.

To be transparent, I use BackupBuddy for the past 10+ years and it never failed me, until now. And I do find their way of restoring, through an installer php, much less cumbersome. But since the development of BackupBuddy has somewhat stalled, I am open enough to throw some coin your way if I can migrate hosting, migrate domain names or simply to have a reliable backup AND restore solution.

    Thanks & Best,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,

You can use the UpdraftPlus free version to restore your on the same URL/domain only. If you are moving to a different URL then the Migrator add-on is needed.

If just moving host but same domain, you can definitely use UpdraftPlus free version. Just follow this guide – https://updraftplus.com/support/moving-hosts/

    Thanks,

    Hi Bryle,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I was moving hosting provider. Same domain name, different db name and db admin name and password.

    I achieved moving it (finally).

What happened is that WordPress got into maintenance mode, because UpdraftPlus did not finish restoring. Once I learned to delete the .maintenance file, I was able to get back into the WP backend and restart the restore. I then restored plugins, uploads and others separately and actually got the website back. pfweeeeeehhhhh!

So, it is possible to move a site from one provider to another with the free version. UpdraftPlus does also adopt to the new database settings. But the file restoring process did not build a lot of confidence in UpdraftPlus to be honest.

But I got the job done. And I am thankful for that! I will keep an eye on the development of UpdraftPlus in case BackupBuddy goes totally stale. But for now it’s working again on the new hosting.

    Thanks again and best,
    Alex
