The best test of any backup software is having to restore a site after a failure. WP Time Capsule failed to correctly restore my site.

My site is set to backup daily, and from what I can tell the backups appear to work.

Today I needed to restore my site, and when I did the resulting restored site was a mashup of recent and past files. Some of the recent changes I made to the code were installed, others not. The restored style sheet, for example, was several days old. The version of WordPress reverted to a version that had been updated several days ago, likewise, several plugins also regressed to earlier versions — all indications of a partial/incorrect backup/restore process.

I managed to fix most of the problems by using FTP to manually copy files from the Time-Capsule backup to my site.

I’ve no way of knowing if I’ve fixed everything, or what might still be broken. I thought I’d give you a chance to comment on this before I leave a one-star review. I cannot rely on and recommend a backup plugin that fails when it is needed.

    Hey Gary,

This is definitely not an experience we want you to go through. I apologise for it. There are two ways to restore a backup with WPTC. One is just restoring selected files which was taken during that day backup and one is restoring to the point. Which takes back your site to that point. Did you try restoring it to the point?

I would be glad to look into the site for you and make sure if nothing has broken. Restore can fail for various other reasons which involves servers than the software. I think it would be fair for us to check the reasons once, before you conclude we didn’t work or leave us a review. We have more than 150 restores happening per day without issues.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thanks
    David.

Thanks for getting back to me.

I restored to the latest back-up point 11/27/17. The majority of the files it restored were older – old plugins, an old version of WordPress, and old versions of all my theme files. I was able to fix the plugins and WordPress by reupdating.

My Theme files I updated by manually copying them from the WPTime Capsule Archive to the Theme folder on my server using FTP. So the backup appears to have been working, but it was the restore that went wrong — restoring the wrong versions of the files. Unfortunately I don’t know when the plugins and WordPress were updated, but I do know that my theme files have been updated over the past week.

    Hi Gary,

I am sorry and sad to let you know this. This happened to be a bug on our end. There was an event where this mistake happens which we couldn’t recreate with our testing. We found the issue and fixed it in v1.14.3
Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.
Yesterday, we have released an update for WPTC plugin version 1.14.3 in which we have fixed this bug.
Now, we just scanned the site, and the site looks perfect. Moving the files from the drive, fixed this issue for you. Also, I can see that you have updated our plugin to the latest version. Thank you for updating, and I am sure you will not experience any such issues while restoring a site.

Thanks for letting me know, it’s good to know that you’ve been able to locate the problem.

I’ll run some tests of my own on one of my ‘Sandbox’ sites next week, and I’ll let you know if I encounter any issues.

I have been very impressed with the way this issue has been handled, and very much appreciate the honesty shown. An excellent example of customer service. Thank you.
