    Hi guys,
I stopped the thumbnail regeneration as it didn’t seem to be doing anything… regenerated a few then stopped.

Can I manually restart it again?
If I do so will it redo the ones it’s already done or pick up from where it left off?

I have lots and lots of images on my site and being able to stop / pause it then restart might be pretty handy.

    Thanks for your help!

    Kind regards,
    JP

  • Hi guys,
    Update to the message:

I stopped the thumbnail regeneration as it didn’t seem to be doing anything… regenerated some then stopped.

Here’s as excerpt from the log:
2018-02-20T21:52:39+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 39626
2018-02-20T21:52:40+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 39624
2018-02-20T21:52:40+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 39622
2018-02-20T21:52:41+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 39621
2018-02-22T09:11:38+00:00 INFO Cancelled product image regeneration job.

It seems to have stopped at 018-02-20T21:52:41+00:00, though I was still seeing the ‘Thumbnail regeneration is running in the background’ message. I manually stopped it 2018-02-22T09:11:38+00:00.

I found the tool to restart it but it seems to start from the beginning again, I have lots and lots of images on my site and being able to pause it then continue from where it left off would be handy.
Especially if it’s going to keep stopping like this.

How long should it take the thumbnails to regenerate? I restarted it at 12:54 and the log only has two entries since then:

2018-02-22T12:54:19+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 50794
2018-02-22T12:54:26+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 50625

It’s now 1:14 so this was 20 minutes ago.

As things stand my site is showing some thumbnails cropped as expected but most are the correct width but uncropped (https://www.comicbookshop.co.nz/).
However if I view the page in the customizer they are all cropped?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks for your help!

    Kind regards,
    JP

    Hello again,
So I’ve activated Jetpack’s Photon as a workaround as I’ve attempted to regenerate thumbnails several times without success. Each time it regenerated the first few images then stopped.
I’d rather not use photon if possible, though if I have to that’s fine.

I am however still seeing uncropped thumbnails on the product page gallery, here’s an example:
    https://www.comicbookshop.co.nz/product/youngblood-vol-6-6/?attribute_pa_variant-cover=vb

Any idea what might be causing this?

    Kind regards,
    JP

@blacksheepwarrior post your own topic. “Me too” does not help the OP, especially when your issue is only semi related and not the same.

In the log where is stopped:

2018-02-22T12:54:26+00:00 INFO Regenerating images for attachment ID: 50625

Were there any other logs generated such as error logs, or anything in the server PHP error log? Background processing could have stopped and would not resume until the cron health check kicked in. If needed you could just use the regenerate plugin as noted in https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/wiki/Thumbnail-Image-Regeneration-in-3.3-

Photon is still a good choice because it’s all on the fly and also acts as a CDN.

As for the uncropped gallery thumb, this size was added in 3.3.3. If the theme has template overrides it may not be in use yet. It looks like your page is still using catalog image sizes in that location.

    Hi Mike,
Thank you for getting back to me šŸ™‚

There’s nothing else in the logs or anything in the server PHP error log though I’m assuming that would be due to me having wp-cron disabled.
“Background processing could have stopped and would not resume until the cron health check kicked in.”
I have ‘define(‘DISABLE_WP_CRON’, true);’ set in my wp-config file and have setup crons via cPanel… should I enable wp cron do you think? If only while the thumbs regenerate?
Is the cron health check something I can manually kick in, to see if it’s the issue?

I’m certainly not against Photon, though I’m using Cloudflare at the moment and wonder if it should be necessary… also I feel if I can get the Woocommerce thumbnail regenerate to work it’ll be better in the long run.

Can you tell me which file the uncropped gallery thumb size is added in 3.3.3 so I can compare it with the theme I’m running (Cyberchimp Responsive) please?
I know Cyberchimp are working on an update so hopefully this will be resolved soon. If I can work out the issue and fix it or at least let them know about it, then I’ll do that.

Thanks for all your help mate!

    Kind regards,

If CRON is disabled and the background processing stops, it won’t be re-ran.

    > Can you tell me which file the uncropped gallery thumb size is added in 3.3.3 so I can compare it with the theme Iā€™m running (Cyberchimp Responsive) please?

We’ve added a new function so we can update sizes without affecting template files, and so we can use filters for sizes as explained in https://github.com/woocommerce/woocommerce/wiki/Customizing-image-sizes-in-3.3-

If the theme is not updated and overrides our template files, it will be single-product/product-images.php and single-product/product-thumbnails.php

    Hi Mike,
So wp-cron being disabled was the cause of the regeneration issue, thanks for helping me with this.

If I have the wp-cron set to run every 15 minutes via cPanel, would this mean if the regeneration stopped for any reason that it would restart once my cPanel wp-cron kicked in?
I only ask as I need to have the cron jobs manually setup for Wp-Lister eBay / Amazon.

Also to get the initial regeneration done (I have thousands of product images) I’m going to need to be able to pause and restart the process rather than have it start from the beginning every time.
Is this something that might be added as an option? Is it even something that can be done?

My theme was updated this morning but it didn’t fix the gallery thumbnails not being cropped. Looking in the theme files there’s no single-product/product-images.php or single-product/product-thumbnails.php files present so I’m not entirely sure that it’s being overwritten.

That said they are all now a uniform size, and I don’t mind how it looks.

I only mention it again in case it’s something you need to look at.

Thanks for all your help Mike.

Perhaps you’d just had a cache issue once you got everything resized since you’ve mentioned all appears as it should for now.

I’ll resolve this for the time being, hope those images stay nice and crispy.
