Responsive themes and site maintenance

Hi all,

I’m a newbie here (and new to WP) and I have a fairly general question: does a responsive theme make a site harder to maintain, relative to not trying to accommodate mobile devices at all?

I’m planning a site for a small nonprofit whose staff has little or no knowledge about the web. They need to be able to add and edit content. Mobile support, on the other hand, is not an absolute requirement (though it would be nice, obviously).
