# Reset BackWPUP to defaults

 * We’re trying BackWPup on our site but it seems we’ve done so before, many years
   ago. The plugin is reading settings from that long past install and causing trouble.
 * There’s a persistent notice that “You have one or more BackWPup jobs that need
   to reauthenticate with Dropbox.” but none of the three displayed jobs have a
   Dropbox connection.
 * The existing DB backup doesn’t work.
 * Seems to us that it would be best to delete all the old BackWPup settings and
   start with a totally fresh install.
 * How to do that?
 * Presumably it’ll have something to do with the WP database. There’s a …._bwpup_backups
   table but it has zero rows.
 * Thanks,
 * Peter Deegan

 * Hi @,
 * Thanks for reaching out.
 * Looks like an old legacy job might still be active from your previous setup.
   You can check it under **Advanced Settings > Jobs > Access legacy jobs** and
   delete any listed there.
 * If you prefer starting fresh, simply reinstall BackWPup. Just make sure only
   one version (free or Pro) is installed to avoid settings mismatch.
 * Once done, create a new backup job and it should work fine without any leftover
   data.

 * “** Access legacy jobs**” — found it! Thanks.
 * Will now see if a DB backup will work.
 * Thanks for the quick reply.

 * Hi [@peterdeegan](https://wordpress.org/support/users/peterdeegan/),
   Following

 * We removed the old/legacy jobs – OK.
 * But there’s no action when we start a simple DB backup, click the green Start
   button then nothing — no error, no log entries, no Backup History, nothing saved
   to the folder etc.
 * Honestly, we’ve put it aside for the moment since there are other more pressing
   matters. Will let you know when we can return to this matter.

 * Hi [@peterdeegan](https://wordpress.org/support/users/peterdeegan/),
 * No worries at all, please take your time. We’ll be here whenever you are ready
   to check it again.
 * When you get back to it, please see if any error appears on the **Logs page**
   under **Advanced Settings > Logs > Access logs**, or if there are any errors
   visible in the browser console after clicking the Start button.
 * That will help us narrow down what’s happening. Looking forward to your update
   when you have a chance.

 * Huzzah! As you suggested, reinstalling the plugin made it forget whatever stuff
   was confusing it.
 * After reinstall, we got the Welcome/first time pages. A simple DB backup worked
   fine and appeared in Backup History.
 * A few questions:
    - how to change the backup save folder to another location than under \uploads\…
      That folder tree is hard to FTP navigate on our site because there are thousands
      of images. Ideally we’d like to make a (WP-content)\backwpup\ folder (on the
      same level as plugins, uploads etc) and put all the backups in there. We’ve
      tried doing that with Write permissions on the new folder but the plugin reverts
      to the default setting.
    - Is it possible to ‘slow down’ the backup process so it isn’t as much of a
      burden on CPU or physical memory? We have concerns about the overall load
      on the site and would like to reduce CPU/memory spikes, even if backups take
      longer to complete. This might not be possible but thought we’d ask.
 * Thanks,

 * Hi [@peterdeegan](https://wordpress.org/support/users/peterdeegan/),
 * Glad to hear reinstalling worked and the database backup ran fine!
 * To answer your questions:
    1. **Backup folder location** At the moment, it isn’t possible to store backups
       outside the defined BackWPup folder under /uploads/. However, we already have
       a feature request open to make this configurable. As a workaround, you can choose
       the **FTP** storage option and point it to a custom folder on your own server.
    2. **Reducing CPU or memory load** You can adjust this from **Advanced Settings
       → Jobs** using the _Reduce server load_ option, screenshot: [https://shottr.cc/s/1JWO/SCR-20251112-plb.png](https://shottr.cc/s/1JWO/SCR-20251112-plb.png),
       lowering this setting adds short pauses between processes and helps reduce the
       overall CPU impact.
 * Let me know if you try these and how it goes.
