Support » Fixing WordPress » rescuing a wordpress site with db and files on new server

  • I have the site root files and a database backup of a website for a friend, and I’m trying to install it on a new server for him.

His previous web designer has gone awol.

So, I have the database, and the site files, which the ex-dev reluctantly handed over, but I don’t know what to do with them.

Here’s what I have done so far:

  • Uploaded the site files to the root on the new server (NOTE – I have not changed the nameservers yet, as I want to get it working before switching the site over to the new host)
  • Created a new blank database with a new user assigned to it (did this in cpanel)
  • That’s it. I’m not sure what to do next, it’s been years since I worked with wp!

Do I need to change references to the old domain name in the database file or something? Or do I simply upload the db file via phpmyadmin?

Any help appreciated! I clearly have no idea what I’m doing.

  • Hello,
You must change the domain name in database, you will have to change in _options var home and site url
After that you will have to change the url in all the posts content.
Then you will have to change the database username and password in your wp-config.php
It is possible that you will have some designs issues and somethings that won’t work, styles issues o etc, you will have to edit your theme and save again the settings, this it is because some themes save the domain serialized, and when you change the domain name wont’t work.
    Best regards
