  • If I try to follow an invalid link on a page, I correctly get a 404 error.

    <a href="http://invalidurl.com/2006/file.pdf">pdf link</a>

However, if I have an invalid audio link, as below, the audio bar sits there indefinitely as if failing to load the audio.

    [audio mp3="http://invalidurl.com/2006/file.mp3"][/audio]

I think WP should give a 404 error in the second case.

This suggestion comes after nearly a year trying to sort out unreliable playing of audios. By chance I tried to link to a .pdf from the same domain and got the 404 error. This led me to eventually uncover a mis-configuration in the DNS settings for the site, which was leading to random and occasional failures to access it. Had I got an error message such as a 404 instead of a ‘hung’ audio play, it would have saved me a year of detective work.

If this post is in the wrong place, please point me to where it should be posted.
