First up, 2.8... very nice.
Secondly, I've read most posts on podcasting. They are mostly about the 2 presently popular plugins.
I think the following should be a native feature of WordPress...
Create podcast feeds directly from uploaded media (i.e. without needing to attach them to a Post). So, you would go to Media > Podcasts and + Create New. Then you select filters (media type, Categories, Tags). Then you specify the URL format you want to use (like you can customise permalinks).
Ultimately, you could run any number of Podcasts, with completely different or overlapping content.
Ultimately ultimately... any content type (text, image, audio, video) should be able to be presented as part of the Loop/RSS fed content. Therefore, instead of just a template file for Pages and Posts (and content types are embedded in Posts), you would also have separate template files for different types of post content. Everything RSS-able, commentable, streamable, loopable.
But first things first... could you add native podcasts directly from Media?
I'd love it.
