Support » Plugin: VS Contact Form » Reply message does not display after update to 12.6

  • I just updated from 12.3 to 12.5 yesterday, and tested the form after doing so – the onscreen reply message displayed properly after the update. However, after updating from 12.5 to 12.6 this morning, it no longer does so – the form is just cleared upon submission, leaving me looking at an empty form and wondering whether my message went through. The first of my test messages does show up in the Submissions list in the dashboard – the second does not. Waiting to hear back from my client about whether both or only one of the messages were received, will update here when I do. Would be happy to provide link to page in email if needed, but prefer not to post it here.

    Hi,

Unfortunately I have the same issue.. Not every time upon submit, but sometimes. Have to look into this.. Strange!

    Hi again,

First I had a similar issue but now every submission is being send properly.. I think it might have something to do with the timetrap or the nonce that are included to reduce spam. If validation of one of those two fails, nothing happens.

But form is not cleard here, it’s still filled in after pressing submit.
If your form was cleared, is the parameter ?vscf-sh=success added to your page link?

Nope, the form just clears, and the page and URL look as they did before completing the form. Also, the third test I did to answer your question, like the second test, did not show up in dashboard Submissions list, so I’m wondering why the first one did. I used the same name, phone and email address for all three submissions – is there an antispam feature that would cause subsequent submissions from the same sender within a certain timeframe not to be sent? I have not heard back from my client on any of them (including the first), so I don’t know whether emails are going out.

Yes, but it’s only a few seconds. Against spam bots.

In some cases a cache/optimize plugin can cause this as well.

    I will keep on testing.

    Hi again,

In your other topic from a couple of months ago you’ve added a link to the site of a law firm, is that the client site? When I press submit for the first time nothing happens. Can you do a test without the Google Map next to it?

Oh, and I notice LiteSpeed Cache is active on that site, can you do a test without this plugin?

After a good night’s sleep my conclusion is that it must be a cache related thing. So are you able to disable caching on that page? Or at least deactivate plugin to find out?

Yes, that is the same site. Please bear in mind that both the Google map and the caching plugin have been installed on the site for as long as your plugin (longer, actually), and that it always worked fine with both of them through the day before the last update, when I tested it after applying the previous update. I am willing to do reasonable testing, but since I’ll have to bill my client for it, let’s be efficient about it and not test things that have not changed since the last time the plugin worked, unless the last update changed something that would impact its compatibility with Google maps or Litespeed cache.

I have not heard back from the client confirming that any test messages were received, so I’ll redirect emailed messages to myself and test again today. I’ll let you know how that goes. In order to troubleshoot for conflicts with other plugins, I will have to clone the site, as it is a production site, so let’s try whatever else we can first. I think I have your plugin installed on another site, so I’ll also check that today and see whether I can reproduce the problem on that site (which has a different theme and plugins and is on a different host). Stay tuned.

    Hi,

The update you mention (12.5 to 12.6) was a tiny update and only contained several changes to the HTML of the form. I cannot imagine that this update causes this issue.

Have just updated plugin again (check changelog). You can now disable mail to admin, can be handy when making test submissions.

Please try to find out if it’s possible to disable the caching at the contact page only. I still think this is the problem.

I’m willing to help you debug the site as soon as you have a clone.

I did some more testing before I applied the update – messages with an email address ending in .org or .com went through without issues, but messages with an email address ending in .net failed – EXCEPT: my last .net test, after tests to 3 other .net addresses all failed, suddenly worked. Possibly because the name before the @ matched the receiver admin address for messages to be sent to? You tell me. Also, a second challenge where I was presented with the filled form but a new equation to solve upon submission occurred on that one (this happens randomly, as far as I am able to tell, not on every submission). Once I solved and submitted again, it went through.

I then applied the update, and after that, all tests worked.

    Hi,

I cannot explain why these strange things are happening. The stuff I’ve added and changed recently doesn’t have anything to do with sending the submission.

When I go to the contact page on that site and press submit for the first time, the form returns blank, but when pressing submit again the form is being processed and error message is displayed. I still think a cached version is being returned somehow, but have no explanation why this only happens once.

You can test with another contact form plugin, on a private page, to determine whether it’s my plugin or something else.

Please do not do any more testing on the live site, as I have reverted the email notifications to my client. I just turned off caching for that page, and will test when I get a chance and let you know whether that resolved the issues, but I may not have time for a couple of days. As I mentioned, all of my last round of tests were successful, except those in which a .net email address was submitted.

Only pressing submit without filling any fields will not result in a submission being send to your client. So no worries.

I just turned off caching for that page

And now everything seems to work as expected.

I tested this morning in 3 different browsers (FireFox, Chrome, and Edge), using different .net email addresses for each one. All 3 went though, displaying the confirmation message, showing up in the dashboard submissions list, and emailing to the admin address. However, in FireFox, after I had solved the equation, entered my message and submitted, the form did not clear, except the equation field, which was cleared and had a new equation to solve, but was not highlighted, so I easily could have missed that if it hadn’t occurred many times before so that I knew to check for it.
