 * Sorry for the long-delayed reply. After much work (and wasted time!), it turns
   out the issue was not what you said but a [known conflict](https://wptavern.com/wp-spamshield-plugin-removed-from-wordpress-org-author-plans-to-pull-all-plugins-from-the-directory)
   with the WP-SpamShield plugin. It had been installed on my site since 2016 and
   defeated multiple previous attempts to add WPDiscuz.
 * This really should have been flagged up much sooner. Perhaps now you can add 
   a warning in your plugin descriptions and suggest this as the first thing for
   users with issues to check in future.
