Support » Fixing WordPress » Replace 200 code with 404 for non-existent pages

  • I got hacked and have rebuilt the site. But there are still hundreds of spam links using my domain that even though the pages don’t exist still show up in google and direct to my index page. What I need to do is to make it so that any visitors or googlebots who follow those links are shown a 404 error page instead of my index page. How can I do that please? Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Out of the box with the default Theme, WordPress does return a 404; I just tested it on my own test site with Firebug.

Take a look at your activated plugins, and possibly even your Active Theme, to see if that is where the redirection to home page happens.
