I have my defender set to hide the correct log in link for wp-admin, and I’m using a private url.

Which is totally fine… MOST of the time.

Every once in a while, it redirects and tells me I can’t access the page, even though I go DIRECTLY to the CORRECT URL.

Three times in the past 3 months I’ve had to rename the plugin just to get access to my admin panel.

Once I’m back in, it’s totally fine in future, even for a new log in. Then a while later, it starts all over again.

I even made sure my ip is in the firewall whitelist.

This really needs to be fixed. 🙁

Not sure if this is why…..

Under further investigation, under the “settings > basic config” it says:

    Mask Login Area Inactive

BUT Under the “Tools” it says
    Mask Login Area Active

And I’ve clicked through and confirmed it is active.

So perhaps this is conflicting with itself on occasion?

    Stumped.

    Hi @dimeco,

Sorry to hear about the issues noticed. Could we know did you check the Defender Logs and if there is any specific reason listed for your IP to get blocked?

You can find the logs under Defender > Firewall > Logs and filter the logs based on your IP, which was blocked.

Under further investigation, under the “settings > basic config” it says:

    Mask Login Area Inactive

“Basic Config” is a configuration setup for Defender. You can create N number of configs with specific Defender settings enabled or disabled and apply that on different websites instead of manually configuring it.

By default, the Mask Login Area feature is disabled in “Basic Config”, and if you apply “Basic Config”, it’ll apply its settings and deactivate Mask Login Area.

The “Basic Config” noticed, and the actual settings under Defender > Tools are both different, and they shouldn’t be conflicting.

Please check the following for more info about Configs:
    https://wpmudev.com/docs/wpmu-dev-plugins/defender/#configs

Regarding the issue, please do let us know whether your IPs are listed in the logs, and if you recall, please do let us know what exact message you noticed on your side when blocked.

Defender displays different messages based on different lockouts, so it might also give us a better idea.

Please do let us know how that goes. Looking forward to your response.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin

Strangely my ip does NOT show up anywhere in the logs as instructed.

I downloaded “all” and searched, and my ip is nowhere in the list.

    I’m stumped.

    Hi @dimeco,

That’s odd behaviour, I also got an update from our developer, and they would also like to know whether you have any cache enabled on your website.

We have noticed a couple of instances where such an issue might have been due to cache, the, i.e. cache is serving a lock-out page instead of loading the actual page and giving an impression of being blocked.

Could we know whether there is any cache enabled on the Hosting side or use any specific cache plugin?

If you happen to replicate the issue, does it make any difference if the cache on the server side is cleared?

    Looking forward to your response.

    Kind Regards,

    Hi Nithin,

No I don’t have any caching enabled.

That’s the strange thing. It’s like, if I go to the site every day or two, it’s fine. But if I don’t go for a few days, (like 4-5 or more) that’s when it seems to suddenly deny me, even though I have the correct link.

I would think having the correct link “should” just take me to log in as usual for the simple reason I have the correct masked url, but it’s like it thinks I’m trying to access a page I shouldn’t. That’s what I find so strange. It’s a hidden link that only I know… so you’d think it would know that if I’m calling the log in page, it would work.

    Hi @dimeco,

Is this website with an issue connected with Cloudflare? Or do you use a load balancer for this website?

Can you please save your current Defender config, download it, and share it with us in your next reply so we can take a closer look?

    Kind Regards,

I apologize, I did not get notice of your reply.

I do not use cloudflare or any load balancers.

I’m not sure how to share the file here, it doesn’t seem to let me upload a file? (It contains my email etc that I don’t want shared publicly, so not sure how to do it… unless I remove that info?)
