Support » Plugin: WordPress Media Library Folders » Reorganizing files and folders

I have used this plugin for a month, and it works fine.
But it seems very difficult to reorganize files and folders. You cannot change the position or the names of folders, and you cannot move files. So it seems necessary to delete folders / files and upload again if you want to reorganize. I am organizing a new site and change my mind fairly often, until I find the best structure for files and folders. So it is a major drawback.
Changing folder names in i.e. fileZilla does not help, because Media Library folders treats the name change as a new folder. Is there a better way to do it?

  • Hi Retailsted,

Moving files does work with Media Library Folders. All links are amended after moving the file. Are you using some sort of pagebuilder ?
Also if you create or change folders outside of WordPress, you need to synchronize the folders with Media Library Folders. Otherwise the plugin does not know that you have changed the folder structure!

You should read the various articles on how to use Media Library Folders in the pluign’s support submenu, Troubleshooting Articles tab, such as this one that includes a video, Media Library Folders for WordPress.

While developing Media Library Folders it became obvious that it would be necessary to build in some safeguards to prevent users from messing up their sites. If users were allowed to rename or move folders, this action would break a number of links to files embedded in the sites posts and pages. For similar reason, user are not allowed to delete folders that are not empty. It is necessary to prevent accidental of files and images that may not be replaceable.

If you need to rename or move a folder, create a new folder with the name you wish to use and move all the files from the old folder to the new, via drag and drop. When files are moved, Media Library Folders will update any links belonging to the files that are use in standard WordPress posts and pages.

Thank you very much for your answers. I have now learnt to move files from a folder the way you suggest, Alan, that is a great help.
