I want to renew my domain name. It’s currently registered under Wild West Domains, but after three hours on the phone with them and back and forth with them over the past 30 days, they insist I need to renew it through WordPress.
However, there is now “domain” button on my dashboard that I know of and I don’t know where to go or who I would contact to renew the domain name. My domain name expires today–can someone please help me?
Also, is there an automatic renew option that I could choose?

Are you hosted on wordpress.com? Or do you have your own wordpress.org software that you’ve installed on a host?

They’re full of shit, as long as you have a top level domain (www.something.com), your registrar is the one whos controlling it, and they are the ones who’s going to renew it, provided you pay, of course. As far as I know, WordPress only have subdomains which they control themselves.

that’s what I thought….. I know wordpress.com has some VIP stuff, where you use your own domain….. but I have never touched it, didn’t know if WP controlled the domain name at all, or if that was from a 3rd party, or what
Interesting….that’s what I thought too, but I’ve talked to like 4 people at Wild West Domain and they insist I go through WordPress. They think WordPress bought the domain through Automatic who then went through Wild West Domains. I’m confused why there isn’t a path to just renew it even if it did go through that cycle.
It’s a self-hosted website using the WordPress.org software. I had accidentally contacted WordPress.com initially, and they guy that responded told me to go back to Wild West Domains–so I did and they pointed me back to WordPress. The thing that’s odd, is that the guy who responded from WordPress.com was from wordpress and automatic. Any advice?
I originally was using wordpress.com and had fly4change.wordpress.com as the domain–then switched to wordpress.org with fly4change.com. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Sounds like an unfortunate situation, someone at one of the 2 places (Wild West, and WordPress.com) is going to have to figure your situation out and help you…..
do you have any emails from the 2 companies? I’d send the email from each company telling you to go to the other to the other company
Hmm…why WordPress.com and not WordPress.org? My blog is self hosted and uses the WordPress.org software. I just want to know, so that I know what to tell WordPress.com.

well, as far as I know, wordpress.org doesn’t handle anything to do with domain names?
It sounded like you were obtaining your domain name while still with wordpress.com? So the confusion is somewhere between wordpress.com and wild west….. I think
I may be wrong on that one…..
Do you have the receipt for the domain? Like an original email when you bought it?
did you ever figure this out? I’m in the same boat and wish to transfer our registration from Wild West to our current host, Bluehost.com. Wild West says “call WordPress” yet there’s nobody to call. I call Automattic, and they say call “Wild West” or “contact WordPress Support” … I’m at a total loss, and considering completely moving away from WordPress altogether.
Know how it sounds, lost a domain myself and paid almost 10 times more to retrieve it.
You can try this. your domain is controlled by wild wild west domains, didn’t they provide you with a domain management panel. you can login into their site and try to use domain management feature if you got an ID on wild wild west. Here is the link:
Moreover your webhost seems to be bluehost, so you can also try to visit them and lodge a complaint. BTW you will have around 30-45 days grace time to renew your domain, but the domain will be parked if you don’t renew it. It is a complete choice of web hosts.
The whole and sole controller of your domain is wildwestdomains.com and not wordpress, only your data is being hosted by bluehost, check this out:
Migration has got nothing to do with domain registrations, so ride up on wild west guys and say that its their responsibility, Threaten them to move to ICANN (http://www.icann.org/) as the domain is totally in their control or lodge a complaint in ICANN itself (they do take time to resolve).

UPDATE: Problem Solved, so I’m posting this here for others in case they run into the same problem…
Quick Background: We set up our website using WordPress. Initially, by mistake, we established a WordPress.com account, and purchased two domains (cherokeepresbytery.org & cherokeepresbytery.com). Realizing the limitations within WordPress.com, we upgraded to WordPress.org and thought everything was fine. A year later, we got an email indicating it was time to renew our domain registration. That’s when we discovered the nightmare that is Wild West Domains, and their lack of “ownership” or “support” for WordPress.com customers.
The solution is real simple. If you made the same mistake that we made, and that “socialbttrfly” made – you’ll need to:
1. Locate your WordPress.com login credentials.
2. Login to WordPress.com, and go to your Dashboard. (NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR WEBSITE’S WORDPRESS DASHBOARD!)
You can try: yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin.
3. GO TO “SETTINGS” > “DOMAINS”
(URL should look like this https://yoursitename.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=domains
4. From there you have two options…
(A) Click Renew by the domain that you purchased.
(B) Scroll down to “Domain Administration” and follow the instructions (Set a new password. Copy the Customer Number located under the password set box. Click on the link “Manage Your Domains”
5. If you chose option A above. You should be set.
If you chose option B above, continue @ #6.
6. Log-in to the Automattic Domain Management Panel using the Customer Number you copied in step 4B above, and the password you created.
7. Select the domain you wish to manage.
8. Under Domain Information, you should see several items, one of which is “Locked: __________.” If it’s set to LOCKED, click the blue “Manage” link and unlock it. If it says Unlocked, continue to #8.
8. Again under Domain Information, now look for the item that says “Authorization Code” – there is a blue “Send by Email” link. Click it, and it will email you the EPP code (to the email address that is associated with the Administrator of the domain registration).
9. Once you have the EPP code, you can contact your desired registrar, and give them the code to complete the transfer.
